                                            Sri Lanka BSM, 2011
 
The Buyer Seller Meet cum Exhibition was organised at COLOMBO from 2nd March to 3rd March-2011 at one of the prominent locations at COLOMBO namely the GALLE FACE HOTEL for the fourth time.The Event was organised by IFCOMA with support from M/s Council for Leather Exports & the Indian High Commission at Colombo-Sri Lanka.
 
The Event was organised to consolidate the Business relationship between India & Sri Lanka on the Footwear, Components & Leather goods front, which has been developed over a period of years. The Indian High Commission provided all necessary guidance & extended their excellent support and co-operation in organising the BSM .The footwear & leather goods association of Sri Lanka also provided their extreme support to in mobilising business visitors from the Footwear & leather Goods sector from Sri Lanka and also in incrementing endorsement from the Export Development Board of Sri Lanka.
 
The event was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Shri Rishad Baithudeen, Minister of Commerce & Industry alongwith the Guest of honours HE - Shri Ashok K Kantha,High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka,Chairman & CEO Export Development Board, Sri Lanka - Shri Janaka Ratnayake & Sri Lanka Footwear Council President - Shri Rangith Hetriarchchy by lighting up the lamp .
 
In his speech,the minister admired the efforts of CLE & IFCOMAespecially the continuance of the Sri Lanka BSM which is being organised for the fourth time; He said that Sri Lanka Footwear consumer market may not be as huge as India but the emerging demand for designer footwear in Sri Lanka appears to be a new trend that Indian industry can exploit.He also emphasized the need for viable industrial partnership between the Indian & Sri Lankan Industries.
 
The BSM was declared open by His Excellency Shri Ashok K Kantha, Hon?ble High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka by cutting of the ribbon .He said that India has powered its position in the footwear manufacturing and stands second in the world. He admired the spirit of the business association of the two countries in the footwear & components fraternity.He also appreciated the support of the Sri Lanka Govt & the Export development board to strengthen the ties of the trade from both the neighbouring nations.
 
Shri Janaka Ratnayake, Chairman & Chief Executive, Export Development board lauded the efforts of CLE & IFCOMA in organising & re-inforcing trade relationship between the Footwear manufacturers from Sri Lanka & Component manufacturers of India. He expressed confidence that such programmes will boost the trade and significant technological development in Sri Lanka . This will also help in augmenting the exports of footwear & leather goods from Sri Lanka.
 
Mr Rangith Hettiarchchy, Chairman, Footwear Advisory Council, Sri Lanka in his address mentioned that the Sri Lanka always looks upon India as a partner in their growth. He urged the Footwear & allied industry to take the advantage of the logistics and imports from India . The growing trade and improvement in Business ties is a very healthy signal for the entire industry. He also extended a combined Vote of thanks on behalf of IFCOMA & Footwear Advisory Council.
 
Mementoes were presented to all the honoured guests by IFCOMA on the special occasion. Eighteen participants covering various range of products including machines/finishes /adhesives/fabrics/ trims & metallic fittings/glitter fabrics/welts/soles/lasts etc keenly displayed the samples & literature along with CLE & IFCOMA , to have a fruitful interactions with the industry.
 
The two day event saw about 350 visitors from the Shoe & allied industry ,interacted with the participants .Major shoe manufacturers including the BATA,DSI,Samson, Michelangelo,SAPCO group , Bettans etc took keen interest in the products on display . Overall Business of the value $ 20000 USD was transacted during the BSM alongwith promising future prospects worth $ 4,00,000 USD was reported by the participants. Trade Dinner was also hosted on the 2nd evening,at the GALLE FACE HOTEL to have an informal interactions between the participants & the local footwear industry.

Sri Lanka Footwear & Leather Goods Industry is fast emerging as an important sector wioth expanding production base although Sri Lanka has the advantage of a disciplined and abundant workforce but it lacks in the field of quality components, leather & the latest technology which India can provide.
 
India has strong bi-lateral trade relationship with Sri Lanka among member ­ countries of SAARC Region, Indian components leather & accessories were found to be suitable for Colombo Industry in terms of price, quality, design etc.
The Sri Lanka Export development Board proposes to hold the next SRI LANKA SHOE FAIR from 9-11,FEBRUARY ­ 2012 .
The component Industry has requested CLE to propose to the Ministry of Commerce & Industry to set up an Indian pavilion during the above show for showcasing the Indian leather & Footwear components from India.
