15TH IFCOMA "KOLKATA BSM 2003" - A GREAT SUCCESS

He further informed that under the 10th plan IFCOMA is setting up One stop resource Centre in four - five footwear manufactuiring areas and a proposal for Kolkata has been handed over to the Honorable Chief Guest Shri Somnath Chatterjee, MP and Chairman West Bengal Industrial Development Corpn Ltd. for his support. He also requested the Honorable Minister and the CLE for taking up the matter with the Honorable Finance Minister for "Exempting footwear components & accessories from purview of Excise" for atleast 3 years and "to rationalise the custom duty on its imports" so that level playing safeguard is provided against unhealthy imports from China affecting growth in our domestic industry. He expressed fear that delay may lead to large scale un-employment world over and that may cause revolt in the implementation of WTO agreement in next 2-3 years. Mr Almal informed of huge raw material consumption by this sector and was confident of self reliance in producing "Sole Moulds", "Last modelling" and the "Designing" work in the next 2-3 years making India self reliant.

Dr. Ramasami in his address emphasized the importance of the Component sector for overall growth of the footwear sector and stressed the need to develop this sector if India has to become a major player in the world "Footwear" trade. He informed of financial support being formulated for development of the Footwear component industry during the 10th five-year plan period. He further told that the tanners should take the shifting to a new complex as modernization of their tannery while the unorganized footwear units should also do modernization adopting latest technology.

Mr Ehsanuzzaman praised the move of IFCOMA and assured all support to the component sector for mutual benefit. He stated, as shoe-manufacturing process is very complicated and need development in component industry can give boost to the footwear units. Reacting to the development of mould highlighted by IFCOMA president, he informed that Bata India Ltd. is looking for international standard moulds to substitute their import dependence from Italy.
