BEST OF INDIA components & accessories at Lineapelle, GDS and at Hongkong fairs which was found to
be an eye opener for the world footwear manufacturers of the present Indian footwear component capabilities.
There has been very good growth in footwear component sector in Indian more because there is a strong raw material presence and supported with large demand in the domestic market. Indian footwear components are today getting well accepted by the world footwear leaders and exports have started too. We have thus also been able to reduce imports of components and accessories considerably. With participation in european fairs, we do learn and look forward to further improve our qualities and volumes in line with the global trends.
Bangladesh today is emerging amongst shoe manufacturing nation in the export and domestic market and has good number of mechanized units. It has a very large unorganized manufacturing sector which is expected to be around 85% of the total country production for domestic market.
There is strong presence of leather and manpower here and therefore, there is no reason why Bangladesh can not bring revolution in this sector. Both of us are closest and have many similarities and well understand each other. We therefore, need to look at the policies affecting our growth as one SAARC nation and request the govt. to implement them quickly so that global opening of trade under WTO can be fought back by us.
With the growth of footwear components & their easy availability in the required shapes, footwear manufacturing has now becoming more of an assembly workshop. The concentration therefore, should be given more on basic requirements i:e infrastructure, up gradation of skills, plant & machinery with liberal duty structures & policies so that quality raw material / components etc. are made easily available to units. We can not to do every thing therefore, we should look at our own strength and plan collectively. The Export zone near Dhaka and at Chittagong has been well praised. It is estimated that there are around 5000 tiny & small units spread all over Bangladesh and they have the potentials to upgrade the quality and volume.
In this Dhaka BSM and exhibition, it is very much hoped that new links will be established amongst the interested parties and a marketing chain with bonded warehouse facilities can be set up in mutual interest of both.
I also understand that an agreement was made between FDDI, India and College of Leather Technology- Dhaka in organizing training courses for up- gradation of skills which will improve quality and volume footwear manufactured by the organized and the large unorganized footwear sector. This was needed and is an excellent step.
Looking to the growth China and other asian countries, I feel it is important that all of us under SAARC nation should draft and implement policies so that the industries are not affected from their dumping.
I wish to see large number of visitors from the industry and trade at this exhibition and hope the first IFCOMA Dhaka BSM 2001 a great success in mutual interest.
